My Public Affairs Role in a Globalized World

My public affairs role in a globalized world will not differ from most people. As of now I am an average college student and play the same role as almost everyone else that is going to college. As I grow older I will be getting a job with my BFA (Graphic Design) degree that graduate college with.  The difference I make in the world with this degree is hard to say. This will depend in which I will live and exactly where my specialties will be placed with this.             First I will start off with where I am now in my life. I pretty typical college student and how I affect the world now is mainly limited to the surrounding area. The biggest way I impact the world right now is through my consumerism. This can be said for most every college student. The majority of the money I have goes into food or gas. The products that I purchase are all pre-made ready to eat or just microwave. So the money I use in which to purchase the food goes back to the company, which made it. From the there the farmer, fisherman or butcher which prepared it. So all the money that I spend originally goes back to where the product came from. Which could be here in Missouri out west or east and even then again maybe even a foreign country. Such as when I purchase a shirt or a product and you read somewhere on it that it was made in India. Me purchasing that product helps pay a foreign worker in another country. This is the state in which I affect the world globally now. As I get older that will change.            As I grow older and start my career my role may make a much bigger impact in the globalization or flattening of the world. My degree is in Graphic Design. A graphic artist job is to design, influence or to make a product or service pleasing to the eye or to grab your attention so you will want to buy a product or read something. Basically it is the artistic side of the advertising business. This can be greatly be a big impact on globalization. Advertising I may due may be seen worldwide. Therefore my ability to reach thousands if not millions of people is enough alone to show how I might help flatten the world. Even though the chances of me getting a job or coming up with a graphic that will reach a million people is unlikely. You can still see and understand though that someone with my degree could do just that.            I think as the world flattens is more of a positive than a negative though. As the world flattens thanks to knowledge and technology people have been much more opened up to other cultures and diversity. The world is turning from monotony to very diverse. Thanks to cell phones, Internet and cheaper travel. People are now exposed to other cultures that once were separated by oceans and mountains. If you think back 50 years ago the average American family resembled that of a classic “leave it to beaver” episode. Now is there an average American family like there was. Not really. I believe this will defiantly create a higher level of tolerance. Which goes without saying would be good thing.             Some of the challenges I see for the world as it melts in this big technological melting pot of diversity, technology is the loss of a private life. As technology advances with face book, myspace and cell phones ones privacy is loss. This I see as more of a downfall. No matter where you are you can be reached by someone. As I recall a perfect example of this would be on a vacation that my family and I took some years ago. My brother was one of the head researchers for a company that helped test pharmaceutical drugs before they are aloud to be distributed to the public. We were on vacation in Puerto Virtue Mexico and my brothers company that he was working for at the time was located in Boulder Colorado. Even though on vacation thousands of miles away he still received many phone calls and every morning had to send many e-mails even though he was on vacation. This happened roughly 5 years ago and the world has shrunk much since then. When I leave college and get job I see the same happening to me. Smart move on your part resisting getting a cell phone.            I guess as the world flattens it will be a love hate relationship but I do believe it is for the greater good.
