Francis Scott Key
Francis Scott Key was a Georgetown lawyer who witnessed the Battle Of Baltimore from Chesapeake Bay aboard an American truce vessel. Originally against the war, the site of the extensive battle at Fort McHenry moved him to write “Defence of Fort McHenry” which was later renamed to The Star Spangled Banner and made the national Anthem in 1931. As night fell on the 13th, the only way he and the people of Baltimore would know whether or not the men had held fort McHenry was by searching to see if the American flag still flew, hence the theme.
