King William's War

(1689-1697)

King William's War, also known as the War of the [League Of Augsburg], was the colonial manifestation of the European War of the Grand Alliance.  It was the first of the French and Indian Wars.

Briefly, the French and English were at war in Europe, so, naturally, the French and English settlers were expected to fight as well at their own expense.  The Native Americans sided with the French.

The war was primarily marked by attacks on the British colonies and the capture of Port Royal.  The British tried, unsuccessfully, to capture Quebec for the first time.

The war ended with the Treaty of Ryswick in 1697.

King William's War was followed by:

-Queen Ann's War (1702-1713)

-King George's War (1740-1748)

-The French And Indian War (1754-1763)
