01a: IntroductionCourse Goals In keeping with Missouri State University's statewide mission in Public Affairs, "Rise and Fall of Superpowers" provides an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to a public affairs issue from a culture/society viewpoint. In plain English, this course's goals are as follows: - To better appreciate America's roles and responsibilities as a superpower through study of two other historical superpowers: the Roman Empire and the Russian Empire/Soviet Union.
- To better appreciate the rights, roles and responsibilities of American citizens by examining the rights, roles and responsibilities existing in the Roman Empire and the Russian Empire/Soviet Union.
- To better appreciate the balance between civilian authority and military power in the United States by examining how this balance was maintained in the Roman Empire and the Russian Empire/Soviet Union.
- To develop further the ability to assess information sources critically, to formulate one's own opinions clearly, and to express these opinions in public strongly but politely.
Lecture 01 Segments Segment 01b: How The Course Works will give you a better idea of what is contained on the CD-ROMs and how these CD-ROM materials relate toward achieving the course goals. Segment 01c: The Importance of History will explain and justify the methodology underlying "Rise and Fall of Superpowers."
