Louis Joseph De Montcalm
Commander of the French Army in New France during the French And Indian War. He was a brilliant commander and tactician, successfully defending several French forts along the Ohio and capturing Fort William Henry. Perhaps because of his experience with taking fortresses, he made a crucial mistake during his defense of Quebec. Knowing that an entrenched English army would inch its way closer to the city, he decided to meet the English commander James Wolfe and The Battle Of The Plains Of Abraham. It is widely thought that, had he waited for reinforcements, the English would have been cut off from their ships and defeated. Nonetheless, Montcalm attacked the British forces and was repulsed. Shot in the side as he returned to the city he declared "It is nothing," but died from the wound that evening. |
