North West Territory

The North West Territory is the collective name given to the territory North of Virginia and West of New York (the English colonial capitals).  Hence the name "North West Territory."  It stretches from the Appalachian mountains to the Mississippi and from the Great Lakes to the Ohio River.  It was divided into states by the Northwest Ordinance which helped prevent empires from forming inside the United States.
