Ottoman Campaign Of 1768Following quickly on the heels of a war in Poland, the Russians tracked down the last few raiders trapped in their territory, and in the process sparked a border war with the Ottoman Turks. The Turks gave support to the Polish rebels, while the Russians gained the technical expertise of the British Royal Navy. The Russian navy was very successful, crushing the Turkish fleet in the Med, and formenting rebellions in Syria and Egypt. The Army was less successful, stalemated as it tried to march south in fulfilment of the [Greek Project]. In 1774, the Turks signed a peace treaty, in which they gave the Russians seaport access on the Black Sea, paid 4.5 million rubles, and granted independence to Crimea. The Russians annexed Crimea in 1783. |
