Truman Doctrine

In a Congressional address on March 12, 1947, President [Harry S Truman] pledged American support for "free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures.

Although his statement was directly prompted by the Greek Civil War of 1946-1949, its intended application toward Communist aggression anywhere in the world earned it the name "Truman Doctrine."
